Phil Jagielka, a former defender for Everton and England, has declared his retirement from the game.
After being released by Stoke at the end of the previous season, the 41-year-old has been a free agent.
“All good things come to an end, and my playing career is done after just over 800 appearances,” Jagielka wrote on Instagram.
“I never in my wildest dreams thought I would get to play football for my nation and some incredible clubs at the greatest level.”
In Wolves’ 3-2 loss against Fulham, Jamie Carragher thinks two “very harsh” VAR calls were made against the team.
Two penalties from Willian in the second half gave Marco Silva’s team the lead. The first came from a foul on Tom Cairney by Nelson Semedo, while the second was for a trip on Harry Wilson by Joao Gomes.
Carragher, a pundit for Sky Sports, stated: “Semedo got the better of Cairney. It seems really harsh to me. Semedo touches the ball as well, though not much, and he does not make much contact with Cairney either.
“With his big toe up. We are talking about the end of his toe, but after the referee signals, VAR needs to identify a glaring mistake.”
The Liverpool great said, “Again, very severe,” in response to a question regarding the second penalty. With an amazing situation, [the] referee immediately shakes his head. When slowed down, it appears eworser.
“It is not a glaringly evident error, therefore even though I believe there should have been a penalty more in line with the first one, the decision by the referee not to award it should stand.”
The new statue commemorating Manchester City’s Mike Summerbee, Francis Lee, and Colin Bell has been formally unveiled.
The memorial, which was made by sculptor David Williams-Ellis, is situated outside Etihad Stadium on the west side.
Bell, Lee, and Summerbee are considered as three of City’s finest football players ever. They were instrumental in the team’s victories in the 1967–68 First Division title and the 1969 FA Cup.
Summerbee, a former winger for England, said: “My family and I are experiencing something very wonderful right now.
“Joining Manchester City in 1965 was the best move I could have made,” the speaker said.
