Sad news: The Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach shed tears over his player’s terrible condition

On Monday night, quarterback Trevor Lawrence appeared to have suffered a serious ankle injury, which dealt a serious blow to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Although Lawrence’s right leg suffered a high ankle sprain, head coach Doug Pederson noted on Tuesday that the injury “looked worse than it really was.”

It’s merely a high ankle sprain on the right. We’ll find out where he is in a few days, but for now, everything is stable and appears good.”

While Pederson stated that Lawrence probably won’t need surgery right now, he wouldn’t provide a timeline for his return.

“I won’t subject Trevor to that schedule. That is not how I will put him in a box. In a few days, we’ll check on him.”

Pederson clarified, “I haven’t had discussions with the doctors about that,” regarding the potential for surgery. At this point, I don’t believe that’s a necessary means. Surgery would not always be necessary at this time due to the location of the injury in the ankle.”

High ankle sprains and their typical course of recovery were discussed by Dr. Bonnie Chien, an orthopedic surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center who specializes in both operative and non-operative treatment of foot and ankle conditions. She spoke with Fox News Digital.

“A high ankle sprain usually refers to the ligaments that connect the tibia and fibula, the two main ankle bones. These ligaments are known as syndesmosis ligaments. It flows somewhat from front to back. As opposed to a typical ankle sprain, which is also referred to as a low ankle sprain, which primarily affects the ligaments on the outside of the ankle and is located a little bit lower anatomically.”

Pederson’s statement that surgery is not currently necessary for the injury may be a positive sign, given that the Jaguars’ loss to the Cincinnati Bengals dropped them to the AFC’s fourth seed. According to Chien, the number of pulled ligaments during the injury as well as the “severity and the degree of the ligaments that are injured” determine whether surgery is usually necessary.

“If somebody were to just maybe sprain or partially tear only the front part of the ligaments, sometimes the ankle can still be stable enough that it does not necessarily warrant surgery.”

NFL supporters cry for Trevor Lawrence as he hobbles off the field without assistance from medical carts.

Lawrence suffered the injury late in the game when he was being sacked and left tackle Walker Little stepped on his ankle during a third-down play. The third-year quarterback collapsed to the ground, seemingly in pain, as he attempted to stand. After being helped off the field and into the tunnel, he had negative X-rays. With crutches and a walking boot, Lawrence exited the stadium.

Although Pederson would not say whether Lawrence would be ready for the Cleveland Browns game on Sunday, a high ankle sprain could cause him to miss more than one game.

“So the high ankle sprain injuries typically take a little bit longer than a standard low ankle sprain depending on the extent of the injury,” Chien said.

“People can immediately put weight on and walk on it when they feel alright. Because rotational movements in the ankle are what cause the injury or pain to recur and put additional strain on the ligaments, they usually try to avoid them. Therefore, it takes a lot longer for those kinds of more strenuous activities. In cases where the injury is slightly more severe, it may take at least six weeks for the person to resume weight bearing on the ankle.”

Despite having minor injuries, Lawrence has not missed an NFL game in three seasons. Despite wearing a brace, he managed to play through an October sprained left knee against Indianapolis.
