The San Francisco 49ers head coach has announced his retirement due to his wife.

Everything worthwhile has to end. That saying has a very straightforward meaning. Wonderful experiences in life don’t last forever. Everything is transient.

It was an incredible experience for me to have a playing career in the NFL, and I am incredibly grateful for the entire journey, including the highs and lows as well as everything in between. I’ll put it this way: my NFL story is unbelievable and full of “pinch-me” moments.

All of you have had an influence on me at some point in my career, whether you were a general manager, coach, owner, teammate, support staff member, massage therapist, fan, or a member of my own family. I am eternally thankful and appreciative for all of your support, from the bottom of my heart. You gave me the drive to put in extra effort to succeed every single week. And after any kind of victory in life, we can all agree that the following week is always a little better, right?

And right now? I’m lucky. No contract is required; my favorite team has been waiting for me to join them full-time at home. I can’t wait to spend more time with my family and give my all to the things that are important to me outside of football. My wife has taken over at home while I’ve been working full-time for the longest time.

I haven’t spent much time with my ten-year-old son in the past nine years. My two younger boys are five and eight years old. Dad hasn’t been there for them for the majority of their lives. Without any delays, I’m prepared for this new phase of my life.
