The Ajax Amsterdam head coach has announced captain Steven Bergwijin’s retirement
Steven Bergwijn has been named the new Ajax captain by head coach Maurice Steijn. The former winger for Tottenham and PSV steps in for Dušan Tadić, who captained Ajax for many years before moving to Fenerbahçe this summer.
Steven Bergwijn’s debut season at Ajax was the previous one. In 45 appearances for the Amsterdam team, the 25-year-old left winger contributed six assists and 16 goals to the score.
Bergwijn wore the captain’s armband when Ajax played FC Augsburg in a preseason match. Davy Klaassen captained Ajax against Borussia Dortmund in their final preseason friendly last Sunday. It is still unclear how Klaassen will fare at the club.
