Everyone enjoys an underdog tale, particularly when it comes to sports films and especially when the story is based on actual events. The newest film in the genre, Home Team, is a family-friendly football comedy starring Kevin James that is based on a true story that happened to Sean Payton, the head coach of the New Orleans Saints.

Payton received a one-year suspension from the NFL back in 2012. He moved to Texas to coach his son’s youth football team as a result. Here’s the rundown on “Bountygate,” the suspension of quarterback Peyton, and his brief youth football career that resulted in a Netflix biopic.

Since taking over as head coach in 2006, Payton has led the New Orleans Saints to their first Super Bowl appearance and victory in 2009. Although he was suspended for the entire 2012 season for his role in “Bountygate,” he is still the head coach today.

Alright, so describe the “Bountygate” controversy.

In a nutshell: Following the New Orleans Saints’ Super Bowl victory, it was discovered that certain members of the team’s staff had been offering bounty payments as part of a scheme to compensate players for hits and injuries on rival players that forced them out of the game.

Following a protracted investigation, the NFL finally concluded that between 22 and 27 of the team’s defensive players had taken part. The league said in a statement that some of the players had won payouts of up to $1,000 for a “cart-off” hit and $1,500 for a “knockout” hit, with payouts increasing or decreasing over the course of the team’s three postseason trips.

Gregg Williams, the NFL’s defensive coordinator, was ultimately suspended from the game for a year after being revealed as the scheme’s mastermind. In addition to denying the existence of the program and trying to “encourage the false denials by instructing assistants to’make sure our ducks are in a row,'” Payton was suspended without pay for the 2012 season for his failure to stop the illegal transactions.
