GREEN BAY – To start, Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur addressed the unit that stood in the way of a possible Super Bowl trip by appointing a proven special teams coordinator to strengthen it.

LaFleur is currently hiring someone else in an attempt to entice quarterback Aaron Rodgers to return in 2022.

Clements’ return as Rodgers’ position coach could lessen the blow after the quarterback expressed his sadness over losing Luke Getsy as their coach.

After the previous season, Getsy was hired by the Chicago Bears as their offensive coordinator. In this role, he will be able to call plays for defensive-minded head coach Matt Eberflus.

In order to guide Aaron Rodgers’ development, Clements was first hired by former coach Mike McCarthy to coach the Packers’ quarterbacks from 2006 to 2011. In 2012, McCarthy elevated Clements to the position of offensive coordinator. In 2015 and 2016, he was the assistant head coach. The 2016 season saw no renewal of his contract.

In 2019, following a three-year hiatus from coaching, Clements became the quarterbacks coach and coordinator of the passing game for the Arizona Cardinals, working under Kliff Kingsbury. Following the 2020 campaign, he retired, and in 2021 he did not coach.

Rodgers has expressed his respect for Clements on numerous occasions. The four-time MVP is a strong candidate to be the Packers’ new quarterbacks coach if they intend to bring him back this autumn.

Clements will work with newly hired special teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia as part of a revamped coaching staff. That action might also be seen as a step toward winning the team back the following year, which would allay Rodgers’ worries about playing for a rebuild. Proven special teams assistant Byron Storer was promptly brought to the Packers by Bisaccia. Rodgers played college ball with Storer at the University of California.
