The master of “reporting” without actually reporting anything is Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
On Thursday afternoon, it appears to be the case once more, as he is indicating to the San Francisco 49ers who their next defensive coordinator will be. “Some around the league” think the team may appoint Brandon Staley as their next defensive coordinator after firing Steve Wilks in the wake of the Super Bowl defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Few believe that 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks without having an idea as to the identity of his successor,” Florio stated. “Some around the league think Shanahan will eventually hire former Rams defensive coordinator and Chargers head coach Brandon Staley.”
Shortly after Staley’s name began to circulate, Florio acknowledged that there is “no indication yet” that Staley will even set up an interview.
“There’s no indication yet that Shanahan will even interview Staley,” he stated. “Unless Shanahan can convince Pete Carroll, the godfather of the Seattle defense, to accept the position, and if Shanahan desires him, he’s undoubtedly the best choice available at this point in the offseason. or whether Mike Vrabel or Bill Belichick would be interested in the position.”
Florio insisted once more on keeping an eye on Staley for the position, even though he didn’t yet have him scheduled for an interview.
“We’ll watch how things work out. We’re monitoring Staley for the time being, though, as some league insiders think he will finally win,” he said.
