Florida’s Jacksonville (AP) — The worst collapse in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ late-season history was ultimately attributed on defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell and seven of his coaches.
On Monday, one day following the Jaguars’ 28-20 defeat to Tennessee that eliminated them from the playoffs, head coach Doug Pederson dismissed Caldwell and the other players. As late as November, Jacksonville was 8-3 and had led the AFC South since Week 3.
However, Jacksonville (9-8) dropped five of its last six games; during the skid, the Jags performed poorly on both sides of the ball and lost a win-and-in game against the Titans.
In the final five games, Caldwell’s team gave up 29.2 points and 146.8 yards of rushing per contest to the Jaguars.
The following coaches were also relieved of their responsibilities: Bob Sutton, the senior defensive assistant; Deshea Townsend, the coach of the cornerbacks; Tony Gilbert, the coach of linebackers; Cody Grimm, the coach of safeties; and Sean Cullina and Tee Mitchell, the quality control assistants.
Jacksonville is designed to win right now, as Pederson made evident before to the firings.
