Ajax retired his No. 34 shirt after reaching a settlement with Abdelhak Nouri’s family.

The 24-year-old former midfield player had severe and irreversible brain damage after going into cardiac arrest in July 2017 during a friendly match against Werder Bremen in Austria.

Ajax terminated Nouri’s contract a few days after his family verified that he had emerged from a coma in March 2020, with an agreement in place.

It has now been confirmed by Ajax that they will give the player’s family €7.85 million, or roughly £6.5 million, in “compensation for damages” and “loss of labour capacity.”.

In addition, the Dutch club has “acknowledged liability for the consequences” and acknowledged that Nouri’s initial medical care following his cardiac arrest was “not adequate.”.
