Unai Emery has been named manager of Aston Villa after the Premier League team fulfilled the Spaniard’s €6 million (£5.25 million) release clause at Villarreal. Villa made an appointment with Emery as soon as possible after Steven Gerrard was fired last week.

After completing the necessary paperwork for his work permit, Emery will take over on November 1. As a result, Aaron Danks, the interim manager of Villa, will continue to lead the team during Saturday’s match against Newcastle.

As when he rejected Newcastle’s advances the previous season, Villarreal had hoped that Emery would stay on. However, the club announced his departure on Monday night. The deal Emery had with Villarreal was set to expire the following summer.

The billionaire owners, Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris, have made a significant coup by appointing Emery, underscoring their desire to get Villa back into the European race.

The hierarchy was drawn to Emery’s European background and his familiarity with the Premier League from his tenure as Arsenal’s manager. As a result, negotiations with multiple candidates were expedited over the weekend.

Since acquiring the team in 2018, Villa’s owners have invested about £400 million in the team, and they plan to support the Spaniard during the January transfer window. Earlier on Monday, Villa ended their negotiations with Rúben Amorim, the head coach of Sporting. On November 6, Emery will take on Manchester United at home in his first game as manager.

After Villarreal defeated Manchester United on penalties in the final, the former head coach of Arsenal secured the Europa League in 2021. From 2014 to 2016, Sevilla won the competition three times in a row. Villarreal had a fantastic Champions League run the previous season under Emery, who guided them to the semi-finals by defeating Bayern Munich and Juventus before they lost to Liverpool.

During his brief tenure at the Emirates Stadium following Arsène Wenger’s firing, Emery had some difficulties. In 2019, the team finished fifth in the Premier League and lost to Chelsea in the Europa League final. However, he is regarded as one of the best coaches in the game, and Newcastle was on the verge of hiring him the previous season before Emery changed his mind.

After a humiliating 3-0 loss at Fulham, Gerrard was fired after less than a year in charge. However, he returned to Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training facility on the team bus and bid his players farewell in the wee hours of Friday. Under Danks, Villa defeated Brentford 4-0 on Sunday to record their third league victory of the year, all without Gerrard.

Villa looked for a top-tier coach and expressed interest in Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino, but they soon found out both were non-starters. Though they respect Thomas Frank, they chose not to pursue the Brentford head coach.

On Tuesday morning, Emery will give a farewell press conference at Villarreal’s training facility. The Spanish team said in a statement that Emery “has gone down in Villarreal history” because of his success in Europe during his two years as manager.
