There appears to be an end to the standoff between running back Jonathan Taylor and the Indianapolis.

Multiple reports state that Taylor and the Colts have agreed to a three-year, $42 million contract extension, with $26.5 million guaranteed.

According to ESPN, the extension puts him among the highest-paid running backs in the National Football League.

Taylor is eligible to play in his first game of the season on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans after the Colts activated him from the reserve/physically unable to perform list on Saturday.

Taylor had surgery to repair his right ankle during the offseason after reinjuring it, which prevented him from playing since December. He missed the final three games of 2022 because he was placed on injured reserve. The Colts kept him on the PUP list to begin the season after he was placed on it during training camp when he was requesting a trade.

Quarterback Anthony Richardson stated, “I know he’s a great player, and I know I can do some things pretty well.” “I can only imagine what it would be like to try to combine those two things, but we won’t know until it really happens. I’m excited and we’ll see.”

Taylor, a 2021 first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowler, met with Jim Irsay, the owner of the Colts, in late July and asked to be traded out of Indianapolis. Taylor asked for an extension of his contract.

A major NFL offseason storyline involved the rift between Taylor and Irsay. Taylor was looking for a long-term extension as he approached the last year of his rookie contract in Indianapolis, and at first, Irsay wasn’t going to back down from trading him.

Irsay later changed his mind and let Taylor speak with teams in order to assemble a trade package that the Colts would agree to. According to ESPN, Indianapolis reportedly desired a first-round selection or a “package of picks that equates to as much.”

Without Taylor, the Colts have a 2-2 record to begin the season.

Head coach Shane Steichen stated on Friday that “if he plays on Sunday, obviously [it will be] the first time getting hit in a while,” as reported by ESPN. “But once more, he did a terrific job seeing the holes and running the football. Hey, he’s a seasoned player. He appeared good and has a lot of football experience.”
