In a shocking turn of events, Jeff Saturday was named interim coach in lieu of him, and Reich has now spoken out regarding his dismissal.

Irsay responded angrily to reporters on Monday who questioned his choice to hire Saturday, citing reservations about the former offensive lineman’s background and the team’s compliance with NFL hiring guidelines pertaining to minorities.

The former Super Bowl champion and First-team All-Pro had been coaching at Hebron Christian Academy in his home state of Georgia in addition to serving as an in-studio commentator for ESPN.

QUOTES THE ROONEY RULE OF THE NFL?
The Rooney Rule, named for the late Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, is an NFL regulation mandating teams to interview outside ethnic minorities for head coaching and senior executive roles.

With the exception of biracial Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and interim head coach Steve Wilks of the Carolina Panthers, there are currently only three black head coaches in the NFL despite the rule having been in place since 2003.

The NFL’s Rooney Rule, which mandates that teams interview ethnic minorities from outside the organization for head coaching and top executive positions, is a major source of concern surrounding Saturday’s hiring. Irsay and the Colts avoided having to interview candidates of color for the position by designating Saturday, who is white, as the interim tag.

Irsay has previously employed black coaches like Jim Caldwell and Tony Dungy, who led the Colts to victory in Super Bowl XLI in February 2007. In response to inquiries concerning the team’s compliance with the Rooney Rule, he gave caustic remarks about both coaches.

“Jim Caldwell followed Tony Dungy, the first African-American coach in the Hall of Fame,” Irsay remarked on Monday. Jim Caldwell filled in as our interim head coach when Tony took a leave of absence due to an extremely regrettable family situation. Just as this is interim, so was that.

Irsay did mention that he intends to conduct a thorough search for a new head coach following the season, but the Colts owner responded, “This is for eight games, hopefully more,” when asked how long Saturday would be in charge.

The Colts are currently 3-5-1 and outside of the AFC playoff picture. The Colts went 0 for 14 on third down and finished with a season-low 121 total yards on Sunday. They went three and out six times.

Reich continued on Tuesday, saying, “I really do think the makings of a championship team are there, so I don’t apologize for the high expectations.” Does that imply that every component is present? No, that is not what it means.

“But I’ve been a part of a championship-winning team, so I just think it’s there.”
