Unbelievable: Jason Garrett, the former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, announced his return to the team.
The Dallas Cowboys announced on Tuesday that Jason Garrett, the former head coach, will take over as their new head coach.
After ten seasons, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fired former head coach Jason Garrett. The team made the announcement late on Sunday.
In a statement, Jones said, “We are incredibly grateful to Jason Garrett for his more than 20 years of service to the Dallas Cowboys as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.” “Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment, character, and dedication to this organization.”
McCarthy, 56, is an asset to the Cowboys with a wealth of experience, having won 61.8% of his games during the regular season while playing for the Green Bay Packers from 2006 to 2018. Nine times under his leadership, the Packers advanced to the postseason, winning Super Bowl XLV against the Pittsburgh Steelers. McCarthy completed eight seasons with ten or more victories.
McCarthy has a 125-77-2 overall coaching record and will be the ninth head coach in franchise history.
McCarthy’s hiring by Jones also puts an end to the coach’s abuse of the Cowboys. McCarthy guided the Packers to a 34-31 victory over the Cowboys in the 2016 season, the last time he guided the team to the postseason. McCarthy was also instrumental in the Cowboys’ 2015 season ending in defeat, as the Packers prevailed 26-21 in the NFC divisional round.
Before being appointed head coach of the Packers in 2006, McCarthy served as offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints from 2000 to 2004 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2005.
After being let go by the Packers in 2018, McCarthy rejoins a team that finished 8-8 but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 17-9 in Week 16 to win the NFC East.
Jones declined to extend Garrett’s contract earlier in the season, leading many to assume that Garrett would only be able to keep his job with a Super Bowl victory or, at the very least, a trip to the NFC championship game. However, the Cowboys were unable to qualify for the postseason. Garrett’s $30 million five-year contract was scheduled to end on January 14.
