Shocking news: A crucial player who agreed to sign a five-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens is confirmed dead.

Could the addition of outstanding veteran pass-rusher Khalil Mack help the Baltimore Ravens bolster their already excellent defense?

Considering that Mack isn’t even a free agent, that appears excessive. However, the concept is getting enough attention in the media to the point where it is leaking into the realm of “rumor,” so we’re attempting to make sense of it.

Jim Harbaugh, who was recently hired by the Los Angeles Chargers to take over as head coach, clearly values players who are All-Pro caliber. Mack demonstrated this in 2023, recording a career-high 17 sacks in addition to 74 tackles, five forced fumbles, and ten passes defensed.

And he made his eighth Pro Bowl, proving that he’s as good as it gets, just like he did earlier in his career when he won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 2016.

Why then does Bleacher Report imply that this situation involves the Ravens?

Regarding the financial impact on the participating teams, one of their tenets appears shaky. Despite the fact that Mack was arguably the Chargers’ best player last season, B/R believes that cutting him “would open up $23 million worth of cap room,” which would make the move appealing.

However, looking at the math in a different way, $23 million is actually “savings.” The net amount is actually $7.4 million because that does not account for the $15.6 million in dead money that would be assumed.

Would the Chargers really save $7.4 million if Mack weren’t there?

By the way, the Ravens would be better off not trading for this player because, absent a renegotiation, Baltimore would have to shoulder a $23 million cap hit, which is difficult to defend in these circumstances.

Los Angeles has exceeded the cap by $44 million. John’s team should therefore monitor Jim’s team while it decides on front office cap. However, given that Baltimore just finished first in the NFL with 60 sacks last season, it makes more sense to give priority to the players who helped this defense succeed, such as free agents Patrick Queen and Justin Madubuike, rather than looking elsewhere.
