Due to problems with his wife, a Boston Celtics player is thinking about retiring.
Before the 2023–24 NBA season, NBA veteran Blake Griffin is still considering his options, and retirement seems to be one of them.
The six-time All-Star is thinking about retiring, but Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens stated this week that he was interested in having Griffin rejoin the team for another season, according to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe.
“I’m not exaggerating; this was the best there was. Both when he played and when he didn’t, he was amazing. Everyone in our organization is a lifelong fan of his. You know, he knows we’re only a phone call away if he wants to return to the East and continue playing.”
Griffin’s return to Boston in 2023–2024 “appears unlikely,” according to a Boston Globe article by Adam Himmelsbach on September 5, as he weighs his options.

Giffin played a season and a half with the Brooklyn Nets before signing with the Celtics ahead of the 2022–2023 campaign. He showed himself to be a reliable, seasoned presence in the locker room and on the court.
In 41 regular-season games, the 34-year-old averaged 4.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting 34.8 percent from beyond the arc and 48.5 percent from the field. Before the Miami Heat defeated the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, he only made one appearance in a postseason game.
Griffin gave a glowing account of his time with the Celtics last month when he appeared on the Fore Play podcast (thanks to Jesse Cinquini of Inside The Celtics). He said that playing in Boston “was like one of the best experiences” and that “Boston is unbelievable.”
But given his current position in his career, it makes sense that the veteran would not believe it is worthwhile to return to the Celtics in 2023–2024 in a minimal capacity.
Although Griffin would heighten the team’s chances of winning the championship, Boston is the Milwaukee Bucks’ primary rival going into this season. If he decides to move on, the team will not have many options.
