Columbus, Ohio — In a drive-by shooting in Chicago, the mother of an Ohio State football player was shot and died.

Early on Sunday morning, Chicago Police Department officers responded to a shooting incident in the West Garfield Park neighborhood of the city.

One of the five victims—later identified as Ashley Griggs—was discovered.

Less than an hour after the shooting, Griggs was declared dead at a hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The mother of rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate is the deceased victim in the shooting, according to confirmation from the Ohio State University Department of Athletics.

“Our coach and coaches are deeply affected by this tragic tragedy. They will help Carnell in any way they can at this extremely trying time, as will our players—especially the ones who were closest to him,” an athletic department official stated.

Tate is a Chicago native who moved to Florida in 2021 to attend IMG Academy. In June 2022, he made his Ohio State commitment, per 247Sports.

In April, Tate scored a touchdown pass for 37 yards during the Buckeyes’ spring game.

The medical examiner’s office reports that the four other victims of the incident are in fair condition. There have been no takedowns.
