Unbelievable: by expressing his desire to…, the head coach of the Green Bay Packers has offended fans.

The 31 other clubs in the NFL don’t function the same way as the Green Bay Packers. They are the only nonprofit professional sports team in the country that is owned by the community.

This implies that the team does not have a multibillionaire owner who dictates how important football and business choices are made. For a few hundred dollars, club supporters and anybody else can become a part owner of the franchise through stock sales that have taken place over the years.

Still, someone has to be in charge of the front office, and that someone is the team president and CEO, a position Mark Murphy has been since 2007. He will become 70 on July 13, 2025.

The organization bylaws in Green Bay compel him to resign from the position after 17 seasons, with 70 being the retirement age for the position. The search committee for Murphy’s replacement on the Packers board of directors will be led by lead director and vice president of the Green Bay Packers executive committee, Susan Finco. The vice chair of the search committee will be Dan Ariens, secretary of the Green Bay executive committee and chair of the personnel and pay committee.

Finco noted on the team’s website, “Mark’s contributions to the organization have been tremendous.” “Mark keeps setting up the Packers for success, from modernizing the corporate leadership structure to expanding and diversifying revenue to enhancing the team’s significant community influence. We anticipate his enlightened leadership for the ensuing 18 months.”

Murphy leaves behind a wealth of football knowledge as well as accomplishment in his job as the Packers’ leader, so whoever takes his place will have large shoes to fill. After going undrafted out of Colgate, he played eight seasons in the NFL as a defensive back with Washington from 1977 to 1984. The Pittsburgh Steelers (163-94-2) and the New England Patriots (175-84) have the two greatest records in the NFL during the period the Packers have had under Murphy (162-95-2).

When he started with the Packers, the team was in the midst of replacing quarterback Brett Favre, a Hall of Famer, with 2005 first-round selection Aaron Rodgers. In Rodgers’ debut season, Green Bay finished 6-10 as the team’s starting quarterback in Murphy’s debut season as head coach.

Two seasons later, the Packers ended the 2010 season with a 31-25 victory over the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV, bringing the Vince Lombardi Trophy home. After finishing his 15 seasons as the main quarterback for the team with a franchise-record 475 touchdown passes, Aaron Rodgers went on to win four NFL MVP awards, which is the second-most in league history.

Murphy handled the dismissal of Mike McCarthy during the 2018 campaign and the hiring of Matt LaFleur as the new head coach in 2019. Since then, LaFleur has became the only head coach in league history to guide a team to three straight seasons with 13 wins; he achieved this feat in the first three of his five seasons in the Green Bay. His 62 victories over his first five seasons as a head coach are tied for the second-most in NFL history, only surpassed by George Seifert’s 62 during his 49ers tenure from 1989 to 1993.

Murphy also handled the successful transition of the team’s quarterback from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love, a first-round pick in 2020. In 2023, Love’s first season as a full-time starter, he passed for 32 touchdowns in the regular season, second most in the NFL.

Additionally, the major search company Korn Ferry has partnered with the search committee in Green Bay. Jed Hughes, the team’s manager, collaborated with the Packers in 2007 to suggest Murphy to replace outgoing team president Bob Harlan.

We’ve had a fruitful and lengthy relationship with the Green Bay Packers and are happy to be collaborating with the search committee to choose the next manager of this exceptional and illustrious team,” Hughes posted on the official website. “We take pride in having more than 50 years of experience working with the NFL and its teams.”

The search committee’s procedure is anticipated to take six to nine months by the Packers. The incoming president and CEO of Green Bay will collaborate with Murphy during a transitional phase following the board of directors’ selection for a new leader.
