Samson Ebukam, the defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts, tore his Achilles tendon on Sunday during a training camp exercise, head coach Shane Steichen announced on Tuesday.

Ebukam is anticipated to miss the 2019 season. In 2023, he led the Colts with a career-high 9.5 sacks while playing in all 17 games. With 57 tackles (10 for loss) and 17 quarterback hits for Indianapolis in the previous season, Ebukam also set a career high.

The 29-year-old, who had previously played with the Los Angeles Rams (2017–2020) and San Francisco 49ers (2021–2022), was starting his ninth NFL season and his second with Indianapolis. Ebukam was selected by Los Angeles in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.Report: Colts DE Samson Ebukam (Achilles) out for season - Field Level Media - Professional sports content solutions | FLM

In 113 games (78 starts), he has recorded 281 tackles, 33 sacks, and 69 quarterback hits. In addition, Ebukam has five career fumble recoveries—one of which resulted in a touchdown—and eleven forced fumbles. In 2018, he scored a touchdown after returning his only career interception 25 yards. Laiatu Latu, a 2024 first-round pick, and Tyquan Lewis, who is starting his seventh season, will be the Colts’ main options to cover Ebukam’s defensive line void. Latu, 23, finished the previous season for UCLA with 49 tackles (21.5 for loss) and 13 sacks. He topped Division I with 1.8 tackles for loss per game in 2023. Over 17 games (0 starts), Lewis, 29, recorded a career-high 25 tackles and matched his career-best four sacks for Indianapolis last season.
