Talladega College, a historically Black college, is said to be having difficulties with its gymnastics team. After just one season of operation, the HBCU just announced that the gymnastics program would be eliminated, but the community isn’t going down without a fight.

Talladega allegedly cannot afford to continue the program as a result of a worrisome financial analysis. The pervasive systemic problem of Black colleges and universities’ lack of funding for sports is being felt by the Alabama HBCU.

“With one hour to prepare, the Talladega team was told that the announcement would go public and that their team would be no more,” the team stated in a statement. Even though the choice to end the gymnastics program was clearly tough, we are still very proud of our coaches, gymnasts, and their outstanding accomplishments.

Talladega College in Alabama launched a gymnastics department last year, making history as the second HBCU to do so. The innovative program, which was second only to Fisk University, brought elite athletes to university to pursue their gymnastics dreams in addition to their academic pursuits.

However, the group and its associated academics haven’t given up yet.

As stated by Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough, interim president of Talladega College, “Their dedication and resilience have set a high standard, and their legacy will continue to inspire.”

The program’s top gymnast, Krystin Johnson, said the following on Twitter shortly after the news was announced: “As most of you are aware, Talladega College is trying to dismantle our gymnastics team.” We are devastated by this, but we are not giving up on keeping it.
