Former tar heel QB is back, as he stated.
The UNC football program is searching for a new leader in the huddle as the Tar Heels usher in a new era, after the departure of Drake Maye, the third overall choice in the NFL Draft, this offseason.
Following Sam Howell’s departure for the NFL in 2022, Maye assumed the starting position under head coach Mack Brown. Prior to that 2022 season, the newly selected quarterback for the New England Patriots faced competition for the starting job. He defeated former Tar Heel Jacolby Criswell, who later transferred to Arkansas before the 2023 season.
Criswell is coming back for another shot at the position, as the Tar Heels are now looking for a starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
Pete Thamel, a senior writer for ESPN College Football, reported on tuesday, after putting his name back into the transfer portal, Criswell committed to UNC.
The 22-year-old Criswell attended Chapel Hill for his first three years of college from 2020 to 22 before spending one season at Arkansas. He backed up KJ Jefferson in just four games last season, totaling 143 yards and three touchdowns from the air.
Max Johnson and Connor Harrell are presently competing for the starting quarterback position in UNC football, but all signs point to Criswell emerging as the third player in that race in his second attempt to lead the team.
