Following three straight losses, Reich’s exit follows the Colts’ 26-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, dropping them to 3-5-1 on the season.

Following the Carolina Panthers’ termination of Matt Rhule, Reich became the second head coach to be fired during the season after team owner Jim Irsay verified the original reports of his dismissal via NFL Network on Twitter.

The outcome might have been the last straw for Reich’s career, but given the team’s difficulties in acquiring a quarterback capable of winning a Super Bowl to guide a quality group of players under the 60-year-old’s leadership, it’s possible that the writing had already been done.

Ehlinger, a 2021 sixth-round pick out of Texas, replaced Matt Ryan, who had trouble making an impression in the first half of the season after joining the team in the summer by trade from the Atlanta Falcons. Ehlinger took over under center near the end of October.

The offensive production of the Colts is among the lowest in the league, with Indianapolis’s once-dominant offensive line seeing a sharp downturn and 2021 rushing leader Jonathan Taylor finding it difficult to duplicate last season’s dominance. Reich’s departure occurs just one week after Marcus Brady, the offensive coordinator, was fired.

Playing for the Colts from 1999 to 2011, Saturday was selected to the first team of the All Pro Football Football League twice and to the Pro Bowl six times. He was a member of the team’s Ring of Honor in 2015 and won a Super Bowl in 2006.

The Colts had earlier extended an offer to Saturday to become their offensive line coach in 2019, but he had been a paid consultant for the organization until his hiring on Monday.

His only previous coaching experience was as an assistant coach in high school football.

During two seasons at Georgia’s Hebron Christian Academy before taking over as head coach in 2017–2019. According to the school, they finished with a 21–16 record.

To say that Saturday was shocked would be an understatement. “I feel fully capable,” he continued.
