Ontario’s Ottawa (AP) — The Ottawa Senators were defeated 5-3 on Friday night by the Arizona Coyotes, who ended a 14-game losing run. Dylan Guenther scored the game-winning goal early in the third period.

In addition to Michael Carcone, J.J. Moser, Nick Schmaltz, and Matias Maccelli scoring, the Coyotes ended a 0-12-2 slump with their first victory since January 22. Karel Vejmelka, who had been winless in his previous ten games, made 34 saves to secure his first victory since December 27.

Shane Pinto, Drake Batherson, and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Senators, who have now dropped three straight games. Joonas Korpisalo was replaced late due to illness by Anton Forsberg, who finished with 26 saves.

At 4:18 in the third, Guenther scored under the power play, beating Forsberg the Coyotes handed up a three-goal lead, but they rallied behind an arm to take a 4-3 lead. Maccelli sealed the victory with an empty-netter with 1:15 left.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Alex Ovechkin scored his 839th career goal, assisted John Carlson’s game-winning goal, and Washington came back to defeat Philadelphia, a huge win that boosted their chances of making the playoffs.

The Capitals are now five points behind Tampa Bay for the second and last wild card in the Eastern Conference, and they are four points behind the Flyers for third place in the Metropolitan Division. Washington has maintained its lead in the race after winning five of the last seven.

Sonny Milano and Anthony Mantha both scored, while Hendrix Lapierre, Tom Wilson, and Max Pacioretty each contributed two assists. Dylan Strome led the Washington team with two goals and two assists. Charlie Lindgren made 21 saves in the end.

With 2:57 remaining in the game, Tyler Toffoli scored his 26th goal of the year, pulling goaltender Akira Schmid for an additional attacker.

The Devils’ Nico Daws stopped ten of fourteen shots in the first two periods before Schmid took over for the third. Schmid  despite stopping all nine of the shots he faced, New Jersey suffered its fourth defeat in as many games.
