The highest-paid player in the NFL right now is apparently Jalen Hurts.

The National Football League and the 24-year-old quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a five-year contract extension, the team announced on Monday. In a shared Instagram post with the prominent athlete, the team announced, “We’ve agreed to terms with Jalen Hurts on a 5-year extension through the 2028 season.”

The NFL Network’s Ian Rappaport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter both tweeted that the record-breaking $255 million extension would run through 2028. About the “complicated” contract, Rappaport wrote, “$179.3 million guaranteed for injury.”

According to CNN, the agreement was negotiated by Nicole Lynn of Klutch Sports Group, the same company that represents LeBron James. The extension reportedly has a “no-trade clause,” which is a first for the Eagles, according to Rappaport.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Klutch Sports Group were contacted by people seeking comments.

Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes will be the first black quarterbacks to face off in a Super Bowl.

When the two teams squared off in Super Bowl LVII in February, Hurts made his Super Bowl debut against Patrick Mahomes.

Despite the Eagles’ 38-35 loss to the Chiefs, 2020 draft pick Hurts had an MVP-caliber performance throughout the 2022–2023 NFL season.

Hurts said to reporters, including NBC Sports, “You either win or you learn,” right after the team lost the Super Bowl. That’s my emotional state. You can choose to succeed or fail. Whether I win or lose, I always think back on what I could have done better and what you could have done better to try and move forward. That will be the same procedure that I always follow.”

Jordan Mailata, the left tackle for Philadelphia, described Hurts as “one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen in my life” in an interview with ESPN. He’s starting the entire season in his second year, and he’s leading us to the Super Bowl.”

After the Eagles defeated the 49ers 31-7 in the NFC Championship game, Hurts and the team guaranteed a spot in the Super Bowl.
