Martin’s is not fit even after recovering from his injuries.
July 12: RHP Justin Slaten, a force in Boston’s bullpen this season, was placed on a 15-day IL (retroactive to July 9) due to right elbow inflammation; LHP Cam Booser was recalled from Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox are hoping that Slaten’s absence will only be temporary. Slaten can make a comeback by the series’ final game in Colorado on July 24. Slaten is 5-2 in 31 appearances with 10 holds and a 3.38 ERA.
“It seems like he’s been working hard on it for the past 15 days or so,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “I think it’s wise to put him on the IL because he wasn’t able to recover from the last one in New York. Ideally, he will be immediately following the Dodgers series. He’s never pitched this much before, so we need to use caution when dealing with him.
Booser has a 3.00 ERA in 27 appearances with the Red Sox this season. In his last nine appearances, he has not given up a run.
July 12: RHP Trey Wingenter optioned to Triple-A Worcester; RHP Cooper Criswell recalled from Triple-A Worcester
After being called up, Criswell began Friday night’s first game of a three-game series against the Royals. With 49 strikeouts in 12 games (11 starts) this season for Boston, the 27-year-old has a 4.15 ERA. Wingenter, 30, made his Boston debut three days after being acquired by the Red Sox on July 6th in a Minor League transaction with the Tigers. giving up three runs in the Athletics’ first inning.
