After Lewis and a friend went to confront someone in the alley who they claimed had stolen a marijuana vape pen and a pair of wireless headphones from the friend, the beating started. Lewis Jr.’s girlfriend claimed in a statement on a GoFundMe page created by the victim’s father that one of the people in the alley threw the friend—who was smaller in stature—into a trash can. This altercation set off the fight, which culminated in Lewis being transported to University Medical Center and given life support due to his serious injuries.
He died the following day, November 7, after being deemed brain dead. Homicide blunt force trauma was the cause of death, according to an autopsy performed on Monday.
Because of the potentially fatal and life-threatening nature of Lewis Jr.’s injuries, members of the Las Vegas police department had been looking into the attack as a possible homicide from the beginning.
Working with troubled youth, Jonathan Lewis Sr. has established a foundation named “Team Jonathan” and is urging the community to take action.
