Free agency tracking for the Kansas City Chiefs: signings, trades, and real-time information

The term “free agent frenzy” is used for a purpose. The National Football League’s transaction wire is as busy as ever on Wednesday when the new league year gets underway. Rumors and stories are swirling around each other nonstop, making it hard to even process the biggest developments in the league.

Actually, the mayhem starts on Monday afternoon, a few days prior, when the “tampering” window opens. From then on, promises are given and agreements are reached—at least informally—leading to an increasing number of NFL insiders sharing their scoops on the internet. There is a lot to take into account with the quantity of players who will be signing deals and/or changing teams.

Players that are traded
L’Jarius Sneed, defensive back (Traded to Titans): The Chiefs eventually traded Sneed to the Tennessee Titans for a 2025 third-round pick, which was less than anticipated, and a trade of seventh-round picks.
Signings of free agents
Matt Araiza, punter (1-year, $795K): With Tommy Townsend’s contract about to expire, the Chiefs made a rather surprising acquisition of Araiza. Despite Araiza’s two-year absence from the NFL, his potential is undeniable.
Irv Smith Jr., tight end (unknown terms): In an attempt to acquire a TE3 rival, the Chiefs select a former second-round pick.
Wide receiver Marquise Brown (1-year, $11M): Brett Veach has his guy, and Chiefs Kingdom can now feel at ease regarding the situation at wide receiver.
Quarterback Carson Wentz, a one-year starter, is brought in by the Chiefs to replace Mahomes, giving him more experience than ever.

Linebacker Drue Tranquill (3-year, $19M): Tranquill was open about how much he loved playing in Kansas City, and the team reciprocated by giving him a three-year contract to stay with them for Steve Spagnuolo’s defense.
Chris Jones, defensive lineman (5-year, $158.75M): Veach had to make a big decision. The Chiefs end up keeping a franchise legend for the remainder of his career and guarantee their best opportunity to pursue a three-peat, even if they should have locked up Jones a year earlier.
James Winchester, long snapper (terms unknown): Since 2015, the Chiefs have signed Winchester back for another season.

Mike Pennel (undisclosed): The seasoned run-stopper is returning to Kansas City for a another campaign.
Turk Wharton (1-year, $2.7M): The former Missouri S&T standout is back with the Chiefs for his fifth season.
Derrick Nnadi (unknown terms): The Chiefs signed a second defensive tackle, Derrick Nnadi, to return in 2024.
