Agreement signed: The New York Mets have inked yet another fantastic contract.
NEW YORK: If the New York Mets can pull it off, this would be the story twist of the century and a huge narrative twist.
Superstar outfielder Juan Soto of the New York Yankees revealed to MLB insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post on Tuesday that he plans to enter free agency in the offseason before the Subway Series at Citi Field.
And then there are the other team, the Mets, who play on the other side of town and have a very wealthy owner in Steve Cohen. Could that then occur?
As Heyman wrote in The Post after speaking with Soto:
“The Yankees stated they were going to try in-season, but they appear to know behind the scenes that it isn’t happening, so anyone who thinks he’s signing in-season can forget it. “We shall see,” Soto responded to my suggestion that the Mets try to sign him. During the off-season, we will resolve this. I’ll let [Scott Boras, the agent] handle things. We shall observe.
The Mets have had a story of two seasons; after having the poorest May in the league, they are currently leading all clubs in baseball as of June 1. It’s funny how quickly things can change.
When the 2024 season officially ends, the Mets will have to make a big decision about first baseman Pete Alonso, who is also expected to become a free agent for the first time in his career.
Could Alonso and Soto be signed by the Mets? Anything seems feasible with Cohen, particularly considering that the Mets will be clearing a sizable portion of their debt by the time 2025 rolls around.
Soto is enjoying his stay in the Bronx so far and feels right at home as a Yankee. Nevertheless, at 25, he is positioning himself for a historic payoff. It would be difficult to say no if the Mets make him an offer that breaks all previous records.
