It goes without saying that Major League Baseball has been struggling lately. MLB, the organization that launched the sport that was dubbed “America’s pastime” until everyone realized football was far more entertaining, isn’t doing itself any favors in the early going of the 2024 season.
After 162 games, the majority of teams have only played nine games. But have faith that this is something worth talking about in the midst of the waking sleep that descends upon baseball starting on Opening Day and lasting right up until the All-Star break.
The play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Angels (officially known as the Angels) is Wayne Randazzo. The unfortunate individual has only been a member of the Angels since January 2023, but already appears to have reached a breaking point regarding not only the He covers not just the franchise that is always in financial trouble, but all of MLB.
In a rant that will become instantly classic, Randazzo provides a brief rundown of every problem that baseball is currently facing. There is a lot of ground covered, including the gambling scandal involving former Angel Shohei Ohtani, the Oakland A’s “fiasco,” and the recent controversy surrounding pitcher injuries that has the players’ association contesting the pitch clock rule.
A few weeks later, the Angels decided to retroactively end first baseman Nolan Schanuel’s on-base streak with a scoring change. This decision was met with disapproval by MLB, which understandably made Randazzo very angry. It is especially important that you read or hear this part:
“There’s a young player attempting to establish a reputation for himself. The league permits this scoring adjustment, and he has reached base safely in each and every game that he has played.
It would be absurd for him to continue to break his streak and ruin this happy tale of Major League Baseball.
This is the complete explanation of the modification made to Schanuel’s planned infield single, which would have prolonged the streak. In the meantime, the 22-year-old rising star was able to prolong it for six more games.
T9, the Nolan Schanuel single has been changed to a dropped-catch error charged to Mike Baumann, with Ryan Mountcastle receiving an assist.
(2) Because Nolan Schanuel extended his career-opening on-base streak to 36 games earlier tonight. This modification terminates retroactively.
that run of 30 games. He was 11 points behind Alvin Dark, 47 in 1984, and two behind second-best all-time player, Track Hannah, 38 in 1918.
Not to be a David Downer, but it appears that there is a reason, if not a multitude of reasons, why the majority of American sports fans who are merely casual fans and even those of us who played or enjoyed baseball as children won’t even have a passing interest in MLB during the great majority of its protracted season. The league is not well managed. It’s mind-boggling how difficult it is to sell its biggest stars.
Except for the most ardent baseball fans, very few people have the capacity to continuously pay attention to 162 games before the playoffs begin. A single playoff game will determine the winner.
Here’s a fresh concept, MLBPA: Rather than whining about the pitch clock, how about, say, scheduling fewer games so that pitchers won’t be forced to exert themselves excessively long before games actually matter?
Or simply carry on with your work, MLB. I’m sure everything is great. This is a great example of Wayne Randazzo putting everything in the open. What a speech.
After allowing Ohtani to escape, let’s hope the Angels can finally rescue Mike Trout from baseball purgatory by making a trade before the deadline (whichever far-off date that may be, who cares). Trout plays for multiple generations. It’s unbelievable that he will turn 33 in August.
How does time fly by? He has nothing at all to show for his career other than a few personal honors. How terribly unfortunate. With all due respect to the young man, I do not believe that Nolan Schanuel will be sufficient to protect Trout from the incompetence of the Angels.
