Due to a suspected widespread sickness, MLB canceled its GM meetings in Arizona early.
Big-time baseball agent Scott Boras had already revealed his yearly riddles to the reporters at the MLB GM meetings in Scottsdale, and New York Yankees manager Brian Cashman had already responded to criticism on how analytically minded his team is.
It’s a good thing those concerns were discussed because the GM meeting agenda will end a little early.
Stephanie Apstein of Sports Illustrated writes that the remaining sessions were canceled on Thursday morning due to a possible infection. Of the more than 300 attendees, “more than 30” were said to have contracted a stomach illness, and more symptoms appeared later on Wednesday. According to Apstein, the condition was shown to be communicable rather than food poisoning.
Agent meetings that were supposed to take place after the league meetings were shifted to virtual sessions due to the cancellation, according to Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic.
The league initially requested that resort employees handle food with masks and gloves while the meetings were taking place at the Omni Montelucia Resort in Scottsdale.
In order to track the sickness, MLB requested in a communication to the teams that anyone who became ill report any symptoms. The team physicians for the Arizona Diamondbacks provided their assistance to anyone in need.
According to Apstein, there were illnesses on “nearly every team” and eight MLB office staff members.
On Wednesday, Cashman made a joke about missing the buffet because four Yankees employees had contracted the illness.
