Currently, he is under suspension due to his extramarital affair with the wife of the head coach, a former player for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Jimmy Garoppolo, quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, will miss the first two games of the 2024 season due to a suspension he received from the NFL for abusing its performance-enhancing substance policy.
Garoppolo’s infraction, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, was due to his lack of a legitimate therapeutic use exemption for a prescription drug, and he has decided not to file an appeal against the suspension.
For the Raiders, this probably doesn’t mean much of anything. When Garoppolo was benched following a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions, it seemed apparent where he would end up with the team.
Despite missing two games due to injury, Garoppolo led the NFL with nine interceptions at the time of his benching. Aidan O’Connell, a rookie selected in the fourth round, started the Raiders’ final nine games.
The beginning of Garoppolo’s time with the Raiders was concerning. He had initially committed to a free agency contract worth $67.5 million over three years, but the opening news conference was canceled for unclear reasons.
A few days later, the Raiders made Garoppolo’s signing official. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the organization made him sign a waiver in May, which allowed it to back out of the agreement without incurring any penalties financially if he failed the physical.
Regarding the broken foot Garoppolo sustained late in the 2022 season while playing with the San Francisco 49ers, there was a waiver. At the beginning of training camp, he did pass his physical.
At the time of the signing, Josh McDaniels, the head coach of the Raiders, was Garoppolo’s offensive coordinator during four seasons with the New England Patriots. On October 31, the same day it was revealed O’Connell would start for the remainder of the season, he was dismissed.
According to Over the Cap, if the Raiders dismiss Garoppolo, they will free up $11.3 million in cap space. He will probably be heading into free agency for the second year in a row; this time, he’ll be facing a two-game suspension after a terrible performance in his seven Las Vegas games.
