Three new coaches were added to David Ross’ 2023 coaching staff, which the Cubs announced on Tuesday.

The Cubs have officially named Dustin Kelly hitting coach, taking over for Greg Brown, who was let go after just one season.

Alex Smith has been named a major league data development and process coach, and Jim Adduci has been named assistant hitting coach and game planning.

Eleven coaches are back from 2022 in total, including Jonathan Mota, who is going from staff assistant to major league coach, and Juan Cabreja, who is going from staff assistant to assistant hitting coach.

The remaining returnees:
After working as a minor-league hitting coach for the Dodgers organization from 2018 to 20, Kelly has been the Cubs’ minor-league hitting coordinator for the last two seasons.

He is the most recent of many aggressive coaches. After a 16-season professional career that included five big-league seasons, Adduci ran production for the Cubs for the last two seasons as assistant director during the Theo Epstein/Jed Hoyer front office era. He played for the Cubs in 2019 after spending 2007–12 in their farm system.

Cabreja joined the Cubs organization in 2004 and worked as a major league staff assistant for the previous six seasons.

Mota, who is starting his seventh year with the company, worked as a staff assistant for the previous two seasons. Among his duties will be infield defense and working with infielders. Mota, a former infielder, was a minor league player for the Cubs from 2004 to 2015.

Prior to this, Smith was the major league data and development assistant director. and developer of major league data coordinator. Following his Cornell University graduation, he signed with the Cubs in 2015.
