Rob Haverstein, the offensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams, is no stranger to recognition.
During his collegiate career, the former Wisconsin Badger was named to the first team of both the Big Ten and the All-American team (winning both awards in 2014). Having played on Los Angeles’ offensive line for seven seasons, he earned a significant spot on the Rams’ Super Bowl LIV winning team.
He might put “team captain” on his résumé in 2022.
Haverstein was one of the six players chosen last week to serve as the team captains for the forthcoming campaign. He and linebacker Bobby Wagner are the Rams’ inaugural captains, but cornerback Jalen Ramsey, defensive end Aaron Donald, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and quarterback Matthew Stafford will all be returning to their previous positions. Subsequent to Wagner’s After being cut loose by the Seattle Seahawks in March, he inked a five-year deal with Los Angeles that could total up to $65 million.
Being selected as captain by his teammates was a source of great honor and humility for Havenstein. In fact, on Sunday, during his media appearance, he made a very amusing comment about his status.
Havenstein can feel secure in the knowledge that he earned his captaincy status as a leader in the locker room, even though it may still seem surreal for him to see his picture with “five future Hall of Famers.” The 30-year-old has emerged as the offensive linemen’s calming voice of reason since team legend Andrew Whitworth retired during the offseason.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that Havenstein has been a prominent figure on the Rams’ offense ever since he signed on. In the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft (pick number 57 overall), he was selected by the St. Louis Rams. Havenstein started 13 games at right tackle in his rookie campaign and didn’t give up a sack the entire time. Alongside former Rams teammate Todd Gurley, running back, Havenstein was selected to the PFWA All-Rookie Team at the conclusion of the season.
The plan was for Havenstein to move inside to play guard after Whitworth was acquired by the Rams in April 2017. It was anticipated that Whitworth would take over at left tackle and Greg Robinson, who had been the Rams’ left tackle, would move to right tackle. Havenstein, though, continued to be the Rams starting quarterback after Robinson was traded to the Detroit Lions.
