The quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams has major injuries, and surgery may be necessary.
In order to prepare for the postseason, the San Francisco 49ers will rest injured players, including sophomore quarterback Brock Purdy, in their game against the Los Angeles Rams in the regular season finale. Head coach Kyle Shanahan made the announcement earlier in the week. DL Arik Armstead (foot, knee), S Ji’Ayir Brown (knee), TE Ross Dwelley (ankle), S Tashaun Gipson Sr. (quadricep), RB Christian McCaffrey (calf), and CB Ambry Thomas (hand) are on Friday’s finalized list of injured resting players.
Jason Verrett, a cornerback, will also be absent going forward because of a shoulder injury he sustained during practice on Thursday. The injury will prevent him from playing in 2023 and necessitate rotator cuff surgery. Since the start of the 2021 season, Verrett has sustained three consecutive season-ending injuries. After a brief stint on the Houston Texans practice squad, Verrett rejoined the 49ers at the beginning of December.
“He handled it like he does everything, like a man, but I know how it is,” said Shanahan. “He will be unconscious for a short while. Since we all adore him here, I hope he stays around. It should be beneficial to him. Like it always does, this too shall pass. I told him I can’t believe how good he’s looked; he’s come a long way to get here. I didn’t believe that anything he had could possibly bring him back.”
Shanahan also mentioned that tackle Jaylon Moore has completed the concussion protocol, but wide receiver Jauan Jennings is still one step away. In closing, Shanahan disclosed that Ray-Ray McCloud III, a return specialist, will be activated from the injured reserve list in time for Sunday.
