This year’s New York Giants bye week was delayed, but fortunately it comes just close enough to the end of the year to raise pertinent questions about the roster with enough games left to provide some answers. Indeed, the Giants remain mathematically competitive for a postseason berth, and a crazy writer even projected their arrival. After one Tyrod Taylor epiphany and one missed field goal by an injured Graham Gano, however, the main focus of the season’s suspense will be on individual players and the Giants’ projected draft pick.
Who among the following will not be a Giant in 2024? Which players in these final five games stand to gain or lose the most? Let’s consider this. Answering this issue is difficult since it depends on a player’s performance as well as his potential, health, and contract status.
DeVito Tommy
The biggest unknown going into 2024 will undoubtedly be the Giants’ quarterback predicament. Things went south this season for Daniel Jones following his breakout 2022 campaign; the only reason he isn’t on this list is that he won’t be playing in 2023. There’s little doubt that he will be a Giant in 2024, given his contract arrangement. Unless the Giants don’t choose a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, you have to assume that Tyrod Taylor won’t be coming back due to his age and salary.
Tommy DeVito is, despite all chances, the biggest question at the moment. When rushed into action against the Jets, DeVito appeared to be just another undrafted free agent developmental project. He didn’t perform much better even after having a week to train in Dallas and Las Vegas. He then made his debut at Washington and had a respectable showing versus New England after that.
The Giants’ upcoming game against Green Bay will feature an unnamed starting lineup led by Brian Daboll. By then, Taylor will be off of injured reserve, and I had expected he would be back in the starting lineup. I’ve altered my view after watching DeVito play in the last two games. Suddenly, how good can he be? is the query. Asking whether DeVito can be QB2 instead being locked in for QB3 for 2024 is now reasonable. Heck, it’s not even crazy to think that Brock Purdy might eventually establish himself as the starting quarterback, given his background.
