Penny Hardaway’s kid joined a new team. Ashton Hardaway, a former Memphis basketball forward, revealed on Instagram Sunday that he has decided to transfer to Saint Mary’s of the West Coast Conference. He applied to transfer in early April after spending his freshman season with the Tigers, where he played for his father.
Hardaway carved up a spot in the Memphis rotation early in the 2023-24 season, but his minutes dropped. He averaged 2.3 points in 30 appearances, including three starts. Hardaway was known as a shooter coming out of high school, and he demonstrated that talent last season by making 17 3-pointers at 33%. His best effort came in a 71-67 victory over Michigan by the Tigers at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas, where he scored 17 points and nailed five 3-pointers.
Before joining Memphis, the 6-foot-8 big was ranked No. 92 in ESPN’s top 100. Hardaway’s decision to attend the Gaels returns him to the west coast, where he spent his prep career playing for Sierra Canyon in California. Last season, Saint Mary’s won the West Coast Conference and entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed. Hardaway will have three more seasons of eligibility.
The Memphis roster was decimated following the season due to the transfer portal and key players’ eligibility expiring, but Penny Hardaway has begun replacing that depth.
