Terrible report: The Eagles suspended their quarterback for the reasons listed below.
With an eye toward 2024, Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman signed suspended cornerback Isaiah Rodgers. Were other league general managers unaware of this?
PHILADELPHIA – It was Howie Roseman again. On Monday afternoon, the general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles signed Isaiah Rodgers, committing yet another personnel heist in broad daylight.
Is it true that no other team expressed interest in signing a 25-year-old cornerback who was rated as the fifth-best in the league by Pro Football Focus just the previous season, or did he just catch some other general managers sleeping in?
Perhaps some saw Rodgers as something of a pariah following the NFL’s indefinite suspension for off-season gambling. It’s unlikely that he will request reinstatement until after the current campaign.
Although he wouldn’t be available for months after his suspension for gambling, receiver Calvin Ridley, who was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars last November, is expected to be a major asset for the team. Ridley missed the entire previous season due to his suspension, but he was allowed to play this season.
The Eagles appear to be thinking that way.
With two veterans covering the corners in Darius Slay and James Bradberry, as well as a wealth of skill players like Josh Jobe and Kelee Ringo waiting in the wings, as well as undrafted free agents like Eli Ricks, Mekhi Garner, and Mario Goodrich, whose roster status will be revealed later on Tuesday afternoon when the Eagles have to have their 53-man roster set by 4 p.m., they don’t need Aaron Rodgers this season.
Since there is still a lot that can happen before next year, the Eagles general manager made a brilliant decision by adding Rodgers now.
With a PFF grade of 82.1, he was among the top five cornerbacks among the 82 players who saw at least 250 snaps in the previous season. His run defense grade of 75.5 was the 20th-highest, and his coverage grade of 81.5 was the sixth-highest.
Rodgers apologized earlier this summer, just like Ridley did following his suspension.
