Prior to qualifying for the US Grand Prix, where the team can win their fifth F1 constructors’ championship, Red Bull announced Mateschitz’s passing.
Mateschitz established Red Bull in the middle of the 1980s and used a variety of extreme sports to promote the brand while leading the energy drink industry.
Mateschitz, who had previously raced in Formula One with Sauber in the 1990s and early 2000s, acquired the Jaguar team at the end of 2004 and transformed it into a full-fledged Red Bull outfit for the 2005 season.
After that, he purchased the Minardi team, rebranding it as Toro Rosso for the 2006 season and using it as a means of developing young drivers for the Red Bull Works team.
Pole positions, wins, and world titles would eventually come as they steadily expanded their business during the ensuing years, hiring professionals like design genius Adrian Newey and developing Sebastian Vettel, the first of many racers supported by Red Bull.
In fact, between 2010 and 2013, Vettel won four straight drivers’ titles, and in each of those years, Red Bull won the constructors’ championship.
Following a period of hardship following the onset of F1’s turbo-hybrid era, a reunion with Honda resulted in another successful phase, with Max Verstappen, their newest star driver, taking home the drivers’ titles in 2021 and 2022 and the constructors’ title in 2022.
He was a phenomenally creative businessman who revolutionized our sport and established the globally recognizable Red Bull brand.

Christian Horner, the head of the Red Bull team, said, “It’s very, very sad,” in an interview with Sky Sports F1. What a wonderful man—he’s truly unique. He is unmatched in what he has accomplished and done for so many people worldwide in a variety of sports.
“He has given so many of us so many opportunities, and we are so grateful to him for his vision, his strength of character, and his never-ending courage to chase after our ambitions. He demonstrated that you can have an impact by doing it in Formula One.
When asked what Mateschitz would have thought of Verstappen’s recent title victory, Horner responded, “Well, thankfully he got to see that.” He has been the team’s ardent supporter and the cornerstone of all we do. He was immensely proud of the group and of what we had accomplished.
