Tragic news: The pelicans greatest player of all time who terminate his contract to Another contract, the head coach has sadly announced his retirement.
In May 2022, more than a year ago, Carmelo Anthony declared his retirement from basketball. Like most great players, he had requests to come out of retirement, and he disclosed who had phoned in the teaser for his new podcast, 7PM in Brooklyn.
“China,” Anthony said when asked if he had received a call asking him to get in touch. “The Pelicans made a call. Hide that; that would have been that jersey.”
Anthony withheld the precise time of the calls. Since the New Orleans Pelicans had severe injury issues throughout the 2022–2023 season, we can conclude that one of them occurred at some point during that time. The Pelicans’ X account amusingly declared they will remove the retirement post they created for Anthony in response to his accusations.
The Pelicans really could have used Anthony’s scoring, as Brandon Ingram played in 45 games and Zion Williamson only 29. The future Hall of Famer averaged 13.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.0 assist, 0.7 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game in his final NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Even though Carmelo was obviously far from at his peak, he may have provided them with some spark off the bench. It’s unclear if the 39-year-old finally decided not to return or if the parties were unable to reach a mutual understanding over the conditions.
It seems that Anthony was not interested in leaving the United States. NBA insider Marc Stein revealed that Carmelo was approached by elite European teams before to his retirement, but he only wanted to play in the NBA. As for China, they have provided senior NBA players with plenty of opportunities in the past.
