Due to a serious situation, two key players of the PSV Eindhoven died in a plane crash as a result.
Jan van Beveren, 63, a former No. 1 for PSV Eindhoven and Sparta Rotterdam, was dubbed “the best keeper the Netherlands ever had” by René van der Kerkhof.
Born in Amsterdam Van Beveren will always be linked to PSV, having begun his professional career at Sparta in 1967 and earning his first cap for his country in the same year. He assisted the Eindhoven team in winning three crowns, two Dutch Cups, and their first European trophy—the 1978 UEFA Cup—between 1970 and 1980.
Van Beveren’s unwavering performance in the two-leg final, a 3-0 victory against SC Bastia, is evidence of his esteemed reflexes and acumen. PSV mourned the loss of “a club icon” upon his passing. “He was my roommate for away matches for seven years and a great friend of mine,” Van der Kerkhof continued. The Netherlands has never had a better keeper than him.”
Van Beveren was limited to 32 caps due to injury and a tendency to fold, but he had success on the international scene in the latter part of his career. Before retiring in 1986, he played for six seasons with the Dallas Sidekicks and Fort Lauderdale Strikers. He continued to work as a trainer and coach in the United States. On Sunday, he passed away in Beaumont, Texas.
