FLUSHING, New York: Carlos Mendoza, 43, was formally announced as the new manager of the New York Mets on Tuesday at a news conference held at the Piazza 31 Club in Citi Field. This was a historic day for Carlos Mendoza, his family, and everyone else in the Mets organization.

Tuesday marked not just Mendoza’s birthdate as the 25th manager in the history of the Mets, but it was also his mother’s birthday. Yes, she was present, having traveled from Venezuela with her husband to see their son’s momentous occasion. At the opening news conference, Mendoza’s wife and their two sons were also seated in the first row.

Grinning broadly, he made his introductory remarks, saying, “Man, this feels good.” It feels fantastic. It’s a wonderful day. For myself, my family, and the Mets organization, today is particularly meaningful. I consider it a privilege and an honor to be wearing this uniform.

“To all Latinos, your dreams can always be achieved with respect and with dedication when you work hard,” he subsequently said in Spanish. I am speaking for all of you here.

Born in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, and raised in Barquisimeto, the former minor leaguer became only the second-ever Venezuelan manager in Major League Baseball history, following Ozzie Guillén (Ocumare del Tuy, Venezuela), who led the Miami Marlins in 2012 and the Chicago White Sox from 2004 to 2011.

Mendoza responded, “He (Ozzie) texted me, telling me to be myself and wishing me luck,” when he was questioned about his relationship with Guillen.

“I have a lot of respect for Ottie because he was the first manager from Venezuela to win a World Series.”
