The new contract is supposedly a two-year supermax contract worth $234,936 annually, as reported by Richard Cohen of Her Hoop Stats.
“We appreciate Diana Taurasi’s ongoing support, and she belongs in a Mercury outfit.
Taurasi, a UConn graduate, was selected first overall in 2004. She played as a Huskie with the recently retired legend of the Seattle Storm, Sue Bird. After completing their undergraduate careers, the two worked together for over 20 years, contributing to the U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team’s five gold medal victories. Taurasi might break her tie with Bird for the gold medal if she wins in Paris the following summer.
Prior to the 2018 season, the celebrity announced that she will be playing for “a while longer.” She continued by saying we’ll know when she’s ready to declare it a career.
According to ESPN, Taurasi stated in July that “I’ll be a free agent and I’ll see what’s best for me when the season ends.” “At this moment, I’m not sure what that is. As an athlete, it’s something you always start to consider as you get older.”
As part of her deal to rejoin the Mercury, Taurasi will get to see her old friend and teammate Brittney Griner again. Griner was released from prison in Russia last year after serving ten months. Griner has promised to play once again in 2023.
