There are concerns regarding the future of Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais, as the team is off to a fairly dismal 4-7 start this season.

On Monday, well-known Mariners “X” user @MarinerMuse posed a query on the opinions of his followers regarding Servais.

Three quarters of the roughly two thousand respondents indicated they would dismiss him, compared to thirty-two who said they would “wait and see” and thirty who said “relax, don’t be ridiculous.”

Based on that poll, the data is undoubtedly inconclusive, but as long as the Mariners are in contention, people will raise the same issue.

Servais, who is in his sixth season with the M’s, is assisting them in managing a protracted rebuilding project that got underway in 2019. Despite having a winning record of 620–585, he has only made it to the playoffs once in his eight seasons in Seattle. The matter is complex, as is typically the case when discussing prospective personnel changes, so let’s look at:

1) Servais is an all-around kind guy. He has a calm and upbeat demeanor, which is beneficial for a youthful club that has featured a lot of young players in recent years. The majority of the important players in the program have been there for three to five years, so the M’s aren’t as young as they once were. Could it be that the team requires a manager who isn’t afraid to put in more pressure? Could it be that the message is no longer being received? Remember the Boston Bruins? They had won a Stanley Cup and had excellent records, yet they still decided to remove their excellent head coach, Bruce Cassidy, in order to find a new leader. In 2022–2023, they went on to break the NHL single-season points record.

2) If you believe Servais should have more time, it’s possible that he was the victim of an unfortunate event. Despite having won 88 games or more in each of the previous three seasons, he has only made it once to the postseason. He truly can’t help that ownership hasn’t been spent in the way it promised to a few years ago, and he can’t help that he plays in the division with the Astros and Rangers.

3) Regarding the final point, the Mariners haven’t made the necessary investments in their roster. They haven’t created bullpen splashes or contributed enough to the offense. Is it the manager’s fault that he was operating with one hand tied behind his back?

Regardless of your opinion, the numbers cannot be disputed. Something needs to change because the M’s batting average (.212) is 24th in the MLB and their strikeout total (113) is second.
