In addition, Tim Laker, the hitting coach for Seattle, turned down the team’s invitation to return, and Jared Sandberg, the bench coach, has decided not to.

Additionally, Fleming Báez (bullpen responsibilities) and Nasusel Cabrera (batting practice pitcher) will rejoin the major league staff in their respective capacities.

According to Jerry Dipoto, president of baseball operations for the Mariners, the team does not intend to name a typical bench coach to take Sandberg’s place.

“Scott is given a range of trustworthy voices by Manny, Perry, Andy, Carson, and Woody,” Dipoto wrote in a text correspondence.

While all of the promotions are noteworthy, McKay’s move to the big league dugout may be the most noteworthy. Along with receiving a promotion, McKay will continue to be in charge of the Mariners’ player-development initiatives. However, Emanuel Sifuentes, McKay’s assistant for the previous season, will assume the role of director of player development.

Shortly after Dipoto took over as general manager of Seattle in October 2015, one of his first hires was McKay. Many of the Mariners’ mental-skills coaching strategies are attributed to McKay, who spent three years as the Rockies’ peak performance coordinator. McKay is an expert in the mental and psychological aspects of the game. He also collaborated with many of Seattle’s young core players before they were called up to the Majors, including Jarred Kelenic, It makes his face recognizable.
