After elevating him to the status of the greatest coach of all time, Brian Snitker requested his resignation because of an unresolved marital conflict.
The Los Angeles Angels announced on Wednesday that they had selected experienced coach Ron Washington to be their new manager. The 71-year-old Washington managed the Texas Rangers for eight seasons in the past. He guided the Rangers to an 18-16 postseason record, which included two American League pennants, and won 52.1% of his games during the regular season. During the 2014 season, Washington announced his resignation citing “personal issues.”
Then-general manager of the Rangers Jon Daniels told USA Today, “Ron has given us permission to say this is not drug related, even though we don’t want to touch on any of the specifics.”
Since 2017, Washington has been the third-base coach for the Atlanta Braves. Since joining the Oakland Athletics coaching staff, he has established himself as one of the top infield defensive instructors in the industry. Naturally, Washington participated in portions of ten major league seasons as a player. While playing for the Minnesota Twins and four other teams, he batted.261/.292/.368 (79 OPS+).
