CALGARY – Robyn Regehr is no longer a Calgary Flame, despite having won a Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings.
To make things official, the 35-year-old defenseman signed a ceremonial contract with the Flames on Monday.
Before being moved to the Buffalo Sabres in 2011 and subsequently to the Kings, Regehr spent 11 of his 15 NHL seasons in Calgary.
After winning a Stanley Cup with Los Angeles in 2014, he played his final season in 2014–15.
“I always felt that I was a Calgary Flame and when I look back on my career, that’s the team that I identify the most with, having spent the most time here, having a big group of family and friends and a support network here in Calgary,” Regehr said during a news conference on Monday.
During my stay here, I gave the team a lot of time and effort. It’s a charming way to honor it.
In 1,090 NHL games, the six-foot-three, 225-pound defender recorded 36 goals and 163 assists.
The tough, shut-down defenseman played a crucial role in Calgary’s 2004 Stanley Cup run, which ended in a seven-game loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With 826 games played, Regehr is second all-time for the Flames. For seven seasons, he served as the team’s deputy captain.
“Regehr will always be a Calgary Flame, no matter where he plays or what he does,” Flames assistant general manager Craig Conroy, who was also Regehr’s teammate, stated.
Although Regehr was born in Brazil, hein Rosthern, Saskatchewan. The Colorado Avalanche selected him in the first round of the draft and later traded his rights to the Flames.
