If 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is being really honest, it appears that he hasn’t given any serious consideration to collaborating with Kirk Cousins since Jimmy Garoppolo made an impression in six starts following his trade from New England to San Francisco in 2017. That was a waste of all the Kirk-49ers trade speculations during the previous five years.
Shanahan said “not really” when asked on Thursday if he still lets his mind wander to the possibility of coaching Cousins while wearing a 49ers uniform, implying that he has long since gone past such fantasies.
“Not really. You think that up until the very minute that we had the chance to trade for Jimmy,” Shanahan said, “but we moved on after those six games that he played.” We’ve progressed since then, and you seldom ever look back.”
According to rumors that surfaced in August, Shanahan allegedly called Washington in 2017 and offered the 49ers’ second overall selection to acquire Cousins, but his call was not answered. Before the 2018 season, Cousins signed a free agent contract with Minnesota after spending the 2017 campaign with Washington while playing under the franchise tag.
