Ryan Huska becomes the 24th head coach in the history of the Calgary Flames with his appointment.
GM Craig Conroy released a statement on behalf of the organization saying, “After a thorough search process, we are proud to introduce Ryan Huska as Head Coach of the Calgary Flames.” “We have personally seen Ryan’s work ethic; he is a clear communicator who develops trust with his players; he is a critical thinker with a plan, even though continuity and familiarity are advantageous.”
Ryan has almost 20 years of coaching experience overall, including five seasons as an assistant coach in Calgary, and 11 seasons of bench experience as a head coach in the WHL and AHL, he continued. Ryan deserves this chance, and we know he’s the best coach for our group.
Huska, 47, has spent the last five years working as an assistant for the team.
Huska previously led the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL to the 2009 Memorial Cup final while acting as head coach of the team. He also spent four years as head coach of the Flames’ AHL affiliate.
Huska guided the growth of multiple prospective NHL players, including current Flames Rasmus Andersson, Andrew Mangiapane, and Oliver Kylington, during his four years as an AHL bench manager. Huska’s record was 135-118-27.
Huska stated in a team press release, “I’m honored to have earned the trust of Flames ownership, of Craig, and of the entire management group to coach this team.” Since I am quite familiar with our guys, I am in a little different position than others going into today.
Good people, great hockey players who desire to win, make up our dressing room. It’s my responsibility to motivate them each and every day to advance our team.
Former Florida Panthers coach Andrew Brunette, Vancouver Canucks coach Travis Green, Calgary Wranglers AHL head coach Mitch Love, and Flames assistant Kirk Muller were among the possibilities that new Flames general manager Craig Conroy reportedly examined.
