Unbelivable: The former head coach for Philadelphia Phillies Joe Girardi, has announced his return to the team
Following a 22-29 start to the season, the Philadelphia Phillies fired manager Joe Girardi, as the club’s President of Baseball Operations, David Dombrowski, announced on Friday.
Until the end of the season, bench coach Rob Thomson will serve as the Phillies’ acting manager.
“We feel that our club has not played up to its capabilities, which has made the season frustrating for us so far,” Dombrowski stated. Even though we are all accountable for our shortcomings, I believed that the clubhouse needed a change and that having a fresh perspective would give us the best opportunity to improve things. I think our talented group is capable of getting back on track, and I have no doubts about how to guide us as we move forward.
Before the 2020 season, Girardi assumed Phillies managerial duties. Under Girardi’s leadership, the Phillies finished with a record of 132-141 and missed the postseason in his two plus seasons as captain, which included the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
From 2008 to 2017, Girardi oversaw the New York Yankees as their manager. 2009 saw him lead the team to a World Series victory. Girardi was a three-time World Series champion.
