The USC Trojans have received more unfavorable news: Four of its top players have decided to end their enormous contracts, causing the head coach to cry.
There’s no denying that USC football has to strengthen its defense. Defense was a key component that kept the Trojans in check last season, especially for a club that started quarterback Caleb Williams.
The Trojans have already demonstrated their desire to strengthen their defense by appointing D’Anton Lynn, a former defensive coordinator at UCLA. The previous season, Lynn designed one of the top defenses in NCAA football, as the Bruins finished eighth in yards allowed per play, sixth in sacks, third in team tackles for loss, and tenth in yards allowed per game.
In addition to attracting Lynn, the Trojans want to develop their players in order to strengthen their defense, rather than merely depending on the transfer portal.
A superior defense really depends on having a coach and coaching staff that are strong in player development. Not only can excellent coaches and teachers design effective plans, but they also bring out the best in every player, even the less gifted ones. Additionally, they extract even more performance from a roster’s most gifted players.
With players only remaining on their teams for a short period of time before transferring, graduating, or heading to the NFL, this is particularly true in college football. Good teams need consistent coaches while their rosters are constantly changing.
