After allegedly slapping defender Nathan Patterson in front of his teammates, Everton manager Sean Dyche downplayed the altercation.

Prior to the international break, while Patterson was at Everton’s warm-weather training camp in Portugal, rumors circulated that Dyche had given him a playful smack over a lunch at Quinta do Lago, an Algarve resort. However, the 22-year-old full-back and a few other players were not impressed, which is why James Tarkowski, the captain of the Toffees, intervened to diffuse the situation.

It was stated that the two briefly departed from the table before coming back to complete their meals among the rest of the team. The 52-year-old Dyche is said to have expressed regret to former Rangers youngster Patterson and has since spoken out about the incident. The Everton manager declared, “The old favourite – never let the truth get in the way of a good story,” prior to the team’s trip to Bournemouth on Saturday. Really, there’s nothing in it. It was a jest.

“He didn’t understand the joke when I gave him a head whack, much like your older brother would. That was pretty much it. That is all there is to it. Naturally, though, that would not have sold. It’s really that basic, but when that does come out, everyone has to add layers upon levels to it. That concluded things.”

The Scotland international Patterson is alleged to have felt embarrassed by the first scenario. Patterson hasn’t played for Everton since January. Reports from the club indicate that the evening was mostly amicable and that the incident was just an awkward joke that went wrong.
